Perumparamba Shiva Temple
Perumparamba Shiva Temple is an ancient Shiva shrine situated at the town of Edappal, in Malappuram District of Kerala. This popular shrine is considered one among the 108 Shiva Temples of Pracheena Kerala installed by Lord Parashurama.
The main sanctum santorium is two storey building shape of square in Kukkudakruthy styled and is centuries old.
Lord Shiva graces here as a Swayambhu Linga {Self-manifested}. It is widely believed that the temple was built over night by the Shiva Bhootha Ganas, more than 1500 years ago. The temple’s architecture indeed reflects the tales that are widely circulated about the temple. The Temple suffered severe damages and was completely robbed off its assets. Until a couple of decades ago, the temple was in a very bad shape, that even the daily Poojas and other rituals for the deity were almost stopped. The temple is currently being renovated with the funds contributed by devotees who wish to restore the lost glory of this historic shrine.
Lord Shiva is the presiding deity if this temple who graces facing the West. Lord Vishnu appears in a separate shrine facing east. It is noteworthy that these two deities are indeed facing each other from their respective shrine, which is a rare phenomenon. The Linga (Shiva Idol) made up of ‘Rudra Shila ’. Lord Ayyapa, Ganapathi, Bala Ganapathi and Dakshina Murthy are the sub deities or Upadevathas of this temple.
Legend
According to Legends, this temple was built by Shiva Booth Ganas within a single night. The Vishnu shrine was added to this temple in the present century. People living in and around the place had to face a lot of sufferings continuously that they decided to identify the reason for it. That is when a holy person informed them that Lord Shiva is indeed very angry with them, which is the main reason for all their sufferings. It was also recommended that Lord Vishnu be installed (prathista) immediately in the temple, since he is the only one capable of cooling the furious Lord Shiva. Thus erected was this Vishnu shrine opposite to the main sanctum of Lord Shiva.
The occasion of Aarudra Darshan falling on the on Makeeryam Star in Malayalam Month Shani and the Maha Shivaratri are the two major festivals celebrated in this temple.
