Gaurishankar Temple, center of faith for 600 years
Kopaganj (Mau): Located in the local town along the Varanasi-Gorakhpur National Highway, the Shiv Mandir, which has a history of more than 600 years within its walls, remains a symbol of religious faith and belief of the people even today. King Pithora of Kauria State of Madhya Pradesh was suffering from leprosy. To get rid of this, he was going to Pashupati Nath of Nepal along with his wife Rani Vishnupriya and Laav-Lashkar. When Lashkar reached here it was evening. Camped there. Late in the evening, the king went to do his daily routine and when he dipped his hand in the water of a small pit in the forest, he saw that his leprosy was cured. They started bathing in the pit and became free from diseases. Then he built a grand temple there in Samvat 1529. The imprint of South Indian architecture is visible in the construction of the dome of the temple.
