Story Of Shri Krishna Birth
Lord Shri Krishna is the incarnation of Vishnu. It is believed that when the earth became troubled with the increasing atrocities of the wicked, it approached Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu assured the earth that he would personally descend on the earth and relieve its sufferings.
Bhadrapada Krishna Ashtami is called Shri Krishna Janmashtami, because this day is considered to be the birthday of Lord Shri Krishna.
Lord Shri Krishna was born from the womb of Vasudev’s wife Devaki in the prison of Mathura in Rohini Nakshatra on the pitch dark midnight of Bhadrapada Krishna Ashtami Tithi.
This date reminds of that auspicious moment and is celebrated with great pomp throughout the country.
‘In the Dwapar era, Bhojvanshi king Ugrasen ruled in Mathura. His tyrannical son Kansa deposed him from the throne and himself became the king of Mathura.
Kansa had a sister Devaki, who was married to a Yaduvanshi chieftain named Vasudev.
Once upon a time, Kansa was going to take his sister Devaki to her in-laws house.
On the way, a voice came from the sky – ‘O Kansa, the Devaki whom you are carrying with great love, your life resides in her only. The eighth child born from her womb will kill you.’ Hearing this, Kansa got ready to kill Vasudev.
Then Devaki politely said to him – ‘I will present the child born from my womb in front of you. What is the benefit of killing brother-in-law?’
Kansa agreed to Devaki’s advice and returned to Mathura. He put Vasudeva and Devaki in prison. But he imprisoned his father, Devaki and Vasudeva.
Meanwhile, Narada Muni met Kansa and troubled him further as to who knows which of his children will become the cause of his destruction.
On hearing this, Kansa decided that he would kill all the children of Devaki and Vasudev.
Vasudev-Devaki had seven children one by one and all seven were killed by Kansa as soon as they were born. Now the eighth child was about to be born.
Strict security was imposed on him in the prison. At the same time, Nand’s wife Yashoda was also going to have a child.
Seeing the unhappy life of Vasudev-Devaki, he devised a solution to protect the eighth child. At the time when a son was born to Vasudev-Devaki, coincidentally a girl was born from Yashoda’s womb, who was nothing but ‘Maya’.
Suddenly there was light in the cell in which Devaki-Vasudev were imprisoned and a four-armed Lord appeared in front of them holding a conch, chakra, mace and lotus.
Both of them fell at the feet of God. Then God said to him- ‘Now I again take the form of a newborn baby.
Gokul Mandal chief Nand and his wife Yashoda were also deeply saddened by their suffering. The seventh son of Devaki and Vasudeva was transferred to the womb of Vasudeva’s second wife Rohini.
This was also the illusion of Lord Vishnu. Rohini lived in Vrindavan along with Nand and Yashoda. That child was later known as Balaram. Balram is considered to be the incarnation of Sheshnag. On the other hand, Yashoda was also pregnant in Vrindavan.
You send me right now to your friend Nandji’s house in Vrindavan and bring the girl born there and hand him over to Kansa.
The environment is not favorable at this time. Still don’t worry. The guards will fall asleep while they are awake, the prison gates will open automatically and the raging Yamuna will give you a way to cross.’
At the same time, Vasudev left the prison, placing the newborn baby Shri Krishna in the soup and crossed the bottomless Yamuna and reached Nandji’s house.
Vasudev did as Lord Vishnu told him to do.
As soon as Devaki gave birth to baby Krishna, Vasudev placed him in a basket and left for Vrindavan.
That day was supernatural, all the prison guards were sleeping. There was a severe storm in the Yamuna river. As soon as Vasudev started crossing Yamuna, the river gave way to him.
Amidst that storm and rain, Sheshnag also reached to protect little Krishna. That scene was extremely amazing. God himself came to earth to suppress the wicked.
There he put the newborn baby to sleep with Yashoda and came to Mathura with the girl. The prison gates were closed as before.
Now Kansa got the information that a child was born to Vasudev and Devaki.
He went to the prison and tried to snatch the newborn girl from Devaki’s hand and throw her on the earth, but the girl flew into the sky and said from there – ‘Oh fool, what will happen if you kill me?
The one who killed you has reached Vrindavan. He will soon punish you for your sins.’ Your end is near.
Hearing this, Kansa became very angry and sent many demons to kill all the newborn children of Vrindavan.
Vrindavan also did not remain untouched by his atrocities. Kansa sent demon Putana to kill Krishna.
Putna took the form of a beautiful woman. She took Krishna in her lap and came a short distance from the house.
As soon as she breastfed little Krishna, she started writhing in pain and screaming, “Help, help.”
By the time the villagers reached there, Putna had been killed. No one could understand that act of little Krishna.
Everyone saw him in the form of a small child. People never realized that that little boy could kill a demon.
The story of the birth of Lord Shri Krishna is incomplete without describing his childhood.
He is also fondly called butter thief, he loved butter very much and by stealing it and eating it, it seemed as if its taste was doubled.
All the women of Vrindavan used to keep butter hidden out of fear of Krishna and his friends.
But he was not short, no matter how far away the pot of butter was, he would always find it.
The whole of Vrindavan was immersed in the illusion of Krishna. Everyone was living life with love and happiness.
In this way, the days passed while playing, grazing cows and listening to the tune of Krishna’s flute. Meanwhile, one day while playing, Krishna’s ball fell into the Yamuna.
The water of Yamuna had turned black due to the poison of the snake present in it. Krishna jumped into Yamuna in search of the ball, seeing this all his friends got scared.
That snake named Kaliya attacked Krishna with his one hundred and ten wings. Krishna assumed a huge form and placed the weight of the entire earth on his hood.
When Krishna was about to kill him, the serpent’s wives requested Krishna to spare them.
Knowing the form of Krishna, Kaliya Naag also apologized to him and assured that he will never harm anyone again. Then Krishna forgave him.
An incident had also happened after which all the villagers had believed in the form of Lord Krishna.
He had come to know that this is no ordinary child, this is God himself who has incarnated in the form of a human being.
When the villagers started celebrating Gopotsav instead of Indrotsav, Lord Indra became very angry and caused heavy rains to destroy the entire village.
There was water all around, life had become chaotic.
When the villagers were crying, Krishna lifted the Govardhan mountain in one finger and gave shelter to all the villagers under it.
Seeing this, Indradev also repented his mistake and asked for forgiveness from Shri Krishna. The villagers experienced Krishna as God.
Every leela of Lord Shri Krishna is exciting and makes one believe that whenever the demons have destroyed happiness and peace on earth with their atrocities, then God has descended on the earth and has destroyed the demons.
The narration of Lord Krishna’s Leela gives a feeling of ultimate joy in the soul.
The words of Shri Krishna were included in Bhagavad Gita so that it may guide us in our difficult times for ages.
Bhagavad Gita, written by him, has always been guiding man. Everything expressed in Geeta is precious, if man starts following it then his life becomes meaningful.
Even today, if we find ourselves surrounded by some questions or do not understand what is right and what is wrong, we can find answers to our questions in Bhagavad Gita.
“Only the man who does his work leaving aside the desire for results makes his life successful.”
Why is Krishna Janmashtami celebrated?
Shri Krishna was born on the Ashtami date of Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapada as the eighth child of Mother Devaki, who was imprisoned after suffering the atrocities of brother Kansa, hence the festival of Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated every year on the Ashtami of Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapada.
What should not be done on the day of Janmashtami?
One should not eat things made of rice and barley on the day of Janmashtami. Do not torture the cow even by mistake on this day.
Best wishes to you on Shri Krishna’s birthday.
