Let us know about those ten divine and sacred birds which are considered very important in Hindu religion…
Hans:- When a person becomes perfect, he is said to have attained the state of Hans and when someone attains samadhistha, he is said to have become Paramahamsa. Paramahansa is considered to be the biggest post.
The swan bird is a symbol of love and purity. It is considered a very wise bird. From a spiritual point of view, the sound ‘Hum’ is heard in the exhalation of a human being and ‘S’ is heard in the inhale. The very course of human life is ‘Swan’ because the acquisition of knowledge is possible in it. Hence, swan is the vehicle of Saraswati, the goddess of ‘knowledge’, wisdom and art. These birds spend most of their time in Mansarovar or on the shores of some secluded lake or sea.
Swan is ideal for married life. They live with the same partner throughout their life. If either partner dies, the other spends his or her entire life alone. Like the law of the jungle, there is no fight for female birds. They choose their partner on the basis of mutual understanding. Family and social feelings are found in these.
In Hindu religion, killing a swan means killing father, god and guru. Such a person has to live in hell for three births.
Peacock :- Peacock is considered the king of birds. This is the vehicle of Shiva’s son Kartikeya. The peacock feather in the crown of Lord Krishna shows the importance of this bird. It is the national bird of India.
Peacock has been given a very high status in many religious stories. In Hindu religion, killing and eating a peacock is considered a great sin.
Crow:- Crow is considered to be an indicator of the arrival of guests and the ashram place of ancestors. Its age is approximately 240 years. Crows are considered very important in Shraddha Paksha. In this aspect, feeding crows means feeding one’s ancestors. The crow can foresee the events happening in the future.
Owl:- People do not consider owl good and are afraid of it, but this is a misconception. Owl is the vehicle of Lakshmi. Insulting an owl is considered an insult to Goddess Lakshmi. In Hindu culture, it is believed that owl brings prosperity and wealth.
According to popular beliefs in India, the presence of an owl on the roof of the house and its sound is considered to be an indicator of the death of a close relative or family member. In fact, the owl already has knowledge of the past, future and the events happening in the present.
In Valmiki Ramayana, the owl was called very clever instead of stupid. When Ramchandra ji fails to kill Ravana and when Vibhishana approaches him, Sugriva tells Ram that he should stay away from the cunningness of the enemy. It was only after deep observation and understanding that the sages made Uluk the vehicle of Sri Lakshmi.
Garuda:- It is also called vulture. Garuda is considered the best among birds. Along with being sensible and intelligent, it has the ability to fly at high speed. There is also a Purana in the name of Garuda, Garuda Purana. It is the religious bird of India and the national bird of America.
There are many stories about Garuda in the Puranas. According to mythology, Garuda, the rider of Lord Vishnu and the one who freed Lord Rama from the snake trap of Meghnath, is said to have the ability to live for a hundred years.
Neelkanth:- Just by looking at Neelkanth, the door of luck opens. It is considered a sacred bird. People are very eager to visit it on Dussehra.
Parrot:- The green color of parrot is seen in association with the planet Mercury. Therefore, keeping a parrot in the house removes the effect of evil eye of Mercury. Placing a picture of a parrot in the house helps children to concentrate on studies.
You must have seen many parrot pundits who make predictions. Many stories about parrots are found in Puranas. Apart from this, parrots have also been included in some story or the other in Jataka stories and Panchatantra stories.
Pigeon:- It is called Kapot. It is considered a symbol of peace. When Lord Shiva had spoken the words of becoming immortal to Parvati in Amarnath, a pair of pigeons had heard these words and hence they became immortal. Even today you will see these pairs of pigeons near the cave of Amarnath. It is said that these pigeons are seen in the cave on the full moon day of Sawan. That is why pigeon is given importance.
Heron:- You must have heard the saying, Heron devotee. That is, a fake saint. Many stories related to heron are mentioned in religious texts. There is a story in Pantratantra, Bagula Bhagat. Bagula Bhagat is one of the famous stories of Panchatantra, authored by Acharya Vishnu Sharma.
There is also a goddess named after heron which is called Bagulamukhi. There is also heron meditation i.e. meditating like a heron. Regarding herons, it is said that wherever they live on a tree etc. near any house, there is peace and there is no untimely death of any kind.
Sparrow:- According to Indian mythological beliefs, wherever these birds live in the house or its courtyard, there remains happiness and peace. Happiness always stands at their door and that house keeps progressing day by day.
