Story of Sita Jayanti
This story was told by Mother Sita, and Lord Rama used to listen to it. One day, when Lord Rama had to go out for some work, Mother Sita said, “Lord, I have a twelve-year daily routine. Now that you are gone, to whom will I tell my story?” Shri Ram said, “Go and sit on the edge of the well and tell your story to the women who come there to fetch water.”
Sita went and sat on the edge of the well. A woman came in, wearing a silk brocade sari and carrying a gold pot. Seeing her, Sita said, “Sister, listen to my twelve-year-old Nitnem.” But the woman replied, “If I listen to your Nitnem, I’ll be late for home, and my mother-in-law will fight me.” She didn’t listen to the story and went away. Her silk brocade sari was torn, and the gold pot turned into an earthen pot.
When the mother-in-law saw this, she asked, “Whose fault is this?” The daughter-in-law replied, “There was a woman sitting at the well who asked me to listen to the story, but I didn’t listen, and this is what happened.”
After listening to her daughter-in-law, the next day the mother-in-law took the same saree and pitcher and went to the well. She found Sita sitting there and she said, “Sister, please listen to my story.” The mother-in-law replied, “Leave it once, I’ll listen to the story four times.”
Ram has come, Lakshman has come, the priest of the country has come
Come Ram, sit down, bring the name of Nitnem
Live in a hot kitchen, Ram, eat butter and sugar candy
Drink milk and sweets, Ram, wear cotton eyelids
Wash a shawl, Ram, wear a shawl, Ram
Whenever I say only Ram, Ram, Ram takes care of everyone’s needs
He will fill empty houses and stores and take everyone across
Shri Ram, Jai Ram, Jai Jai Ram
The mother-in-law said, “Sister, I really enjoyed the story.” After listening to the story, the mother-in-law went home, and her saree turned into silk and brocade again. The clay pot turned into a golden pot. The daughter-in-law asked, “Mother-in-law, how did you do all this?” The mother-in-law replied, “Daughter-in-law, you came here with a blame, and now I’m coming back with a cleansing…” The daughter-in-law then asked who the woman at the well was. The mother-in-law replied that she was Sita Mata… She transforms old things into new things, fills empty houses with treasures, makes Goddess Lakshmi reside in the home, and fulfills any wish a person may have… The daughter-in-law said, “Tell me a story like this too…” The mother-in-law said, “Okay, you listen too.” And the mother-in-law began the story…
Rama came, Lakshman came, the priest of the country came,
Come, Rama, sit down, Rama
Live in a hot kitchen, Rama, eat butter and sugar candy, Rama
Drink milk, sweets, Rama, thicken the cotton eyelids, Rama
Wash a shawl, Rama, wear a shawl, Rama
Whenever I say only Rama, Rama, Rama takes care of everyone’s work
He will fill the empty house’s storehouse and take everyone across.
Shri Rama, Jai Rama, Jai-Jai Ram
After listening to the story, the daughter-in-law said, “It’s a wonderful story.” The mother-in-law said, “Okay, we’ll tell this story every day.” Now, every morning, the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law would wake up, bathe, and pray, and then tell the story of Sita every morning. One day, a neighbor came to her house and asked, “Sister, please give me some heat.” She replied, “I haven’t even lit the stove yet.” The neighbor asked, “What are you doing up at four in the morning?” She replied, “We wake up in the morning and then we tell the story of Sita Mata during our daily prayers.”
The neighbor, listening to her, asked, “What did you gain from telling the story of Sita?” She said that telling her story fills the house with treasures. All tasks are accomplished, and even desires are fulfilled. The neighbor said, “Sister, please tell me a story like this too.” She said, “Okay, you can listen to this story too…”
Rama has come, Lakshmana has come, the priest of the country has come, he has brought the name of the Nitnem, come Rama, sit down Rama……………
After listening to the entire story, the neighbor said, “Sister, I really enjoyed this story.” Now, the neighbor also began telling the story of Sita Mata Nitnem. Through her telling, Sita Mata filled her neighbor’s storehouse as well. Now, the story of Nitnem spread throughout the neighborhood… everyone’s wishes began to come true…
O Sita Mata! Just as you filled their storehouses, please fill ours too. The storehouses of both the listener and the narrator.
In Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, and some areas of Haryana, this story is still recounted with great enthusiasm on Sita Jayanti.
