The importance and mystery of incense sticks in Indian culture

Incense and lamps hold immense significance in our religion. They are not just a fragrance, but a spiritual act that purifies the atmosphere and pleases the gods and ancestors.

Ancient method of offering incense:
Instead of using the chemical-laden incense available today, adopt the ancient method. Light a charcoal fire and place equal amounts of jaggery and ghee on the embers. Offer water with your finger and meditate on the gods, and with your thumb, meditate on your ancestors.

Rules and timing:
If it’s not possible every day, then offer incense every morning and evening on the thirteenth day, fourteenth day, new moon day, and full moon day. In the morning, offer incense to the gods and in the evening to the ancestors. The house should be clean before offering incense, and offer it only in the north-east corner.

Main types of incense:
The scriptures describe several types of incense, the most prominent of which are ‘Shodashang Dhoop’ (a mixture of 16 ingredients) and ‘Dashang Dhoop’ (a mixture of 10 ingredients).

Some special incense and their benefits:
1️⃣ Camphor and cloves: Burning them in the morning and evening removes Vastu defects and brings financial gains.
2️⃣ Guggulu incense: Burning them once a week calms domestic disputes and provides mental peace.
3️⃣ Yellow mustard and frankincense: Burning them on a stick at sunset removes negative energy.
4️⃣ Neem leaves: Burning them 1-2 times a week eliminates Vastu defects and destroys germs.
