What is the meaning of ‘Alakh Niranjan’?

Share

A popular chant associated with the deity Dattatreya is ‘Alakh Niranjan’. The significance of ‘Alakh Niranjan’ is as follows: ‘Anjan’ signifies ignorance; the destruction of ignorance is ‘Niranjan’, meaning the attainment of knowledge. ‘Laksh’ refers to seeing or the ability to see. ‘Alaksh’ refers to that which is so brilliant and radiant that it cannot be beheld.
‘Alakh’ is a derivative of the word ‘Alaksh’. Thus, the meaning of ‘Alakh Niranjan’ is the radiant brilliance of knowledge—something that, while impossible to perceive with the physical eye, is directly realized and experienced.
It holds another meaning as well: according to the Aghorpanthis, ‘Alakh’ signifies ‘to awaken’ (or ‘to call out’), and ‘Niranjan’ signifies the ‘Lord of Eternal Time’… “O Lord of Eternal Time, awaken…” Look, we are calling out.
The meaning of *Alakh* is ‘imperceptible’—that which cannot be seen. *Niranjan* refers to the Supreme Soul.
Thus, *Alakh-Niranjan* signifies the Supreme Soul—the One who cannot be seen.
