Mahoba Khakra Math Temple – Uttar Pradesh

Introduction

The Khakra Math Temple is a historic temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Mahoba City, which is situated in the Mahoba District in the Bundelkhand region of Uttar Pradesh, India.

One of the most picturesque monument of Mahoba. It is situated on an island in Madan Sagar Lake. The shikhara of this temple has collapsed but it still impressive and a treat to the eyes. Recently, government has set up a floating bridge over the lake so that people can have a closer look at the monument.

About a thousand years ago, Chandeli king Madan Varman built Madan Sagar. Khakhramath is situated in the middle of it. This building, which is very excellent in terms of architecture, was at that time used as the consultation room of Alha Udal. Its specialty was the amazing carvings on granite stones as well as the construction of the entire building by placing it in the grooves of the stones. For centuries, thousands of expert eyes got tired of searching for the joints of this building. Till the 80s, this excellent artwork remained the center of attraction for domestic and foreign tourists. Thousands of tourists from across the seven seas used to come to see it every year. This is the reason why the Archaeological Department declared it a protected monument.
The Khakra Math Temple is believed to be approximately 1100 years old, making it a significant historical and religious site.

The temple is built of red granite stone and follows the Bhumija style of architecture. This architectural style is notable for its intricate and ornate design and is characterized by multiple shikharas (towers) and a complex layout. It is worth noting that this temple might be the first in the Bundelkhand region to be built in the Bhumija style.
