MAA TARA CHANDI Kota,Bihar

Share

Maa Tara in Sasaram is situated in a natural cave of Kaimur hill of Vindhya mountain range. Next to the goddess statue, the Kharwar dynasty king Mahanayak Pratap Dhavaldev of the twelfth century has got a big inscription written here by his son Shatrudhan. As the form of Mother Tara is described in Tantrashastras and iconography, similarly the idol of Maa Tara has four hands. The right hand holds a knife and a scissor, while the left holds a hood and a lotus. Left foot is forward on the dead body. The stature is short, lambodar and indigo character. Tiger skin is wrapped in the cut. The statues of Maa Tara and Surya located in the Maa Tara temple complex and the fragmentary statue of Agni placed outside, all belong to the late Gupta period or the later Gupta period. The inscription being written here by the Kharwar king means that the fame of Tarachandi Devi had spread at that time.
